  • Give yoghurt a go

Help prevent recurrences of bacterial or candidal vaginitis by eating 5 ounces (113 grams) a day of yoghurt containing live Lactobacillus acidophilus, a friendly bacteria

  • Use an over-the-counter remedy
  • Steer clear of irritants

Reduce vaginal irritation by minimising friction and reducing your exposure to perfumes, spermicides, and other chemicals

  • Ask about prescription medications that may be right for you; these include hormones, such as conjugated oestrogens (Premarin), estradiol (Estrace, Vagifem), or oestropipate (Ogen), the antibiotic metronidazole (Flagyl), or the anti-yeast drug butoconazole (Gynazole-1)

  • Get a check-up

Visit your doctor to find out if your vaginitis is caused by a treatable medical condition
