Pomella®: The Importance of Gut Health & Short Chain Fatty Acids

Pomella® Pomegranate Extract is a breakthrough formula developed to deliver benefits through the antioxidant polyphenols, in particular ellagitannins, such as punicalagins and their gut-derived metabolites, urolithins. Besides being a clean-label and plant-based ingredient, the potent antioxidant properties of Pomella® support a wide variety of applications, including gut health, beauty from within, and much more.

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults (men & women) aged 25-55yrs, a single capsule of 250 mg Pomella® (from Punica granatum) was administered orally each day for 4 weeks. Researchers examined shifts in gut microbiota and in blood short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels.1

Results concluded that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) shifted in the Pomella® group with a 38% increase (versus 1.8% decrease with placebo) in acetates and 162% increase (versus 0.1% increase with placebo) in propionates.

What are short chain fatty acids and why are they important? Short chain fatty acids can act as postbiotics, or the bioactive by-product of probiotics and prebiotics, in signalling from the gut to other areas of the body. In particular, butyrate, propionate, and acetate are key amino acids known to support the gut-body axes.
