Algatechnologies Ltd. has announced an R&D deal with German company SCHOTT AG to boost the productivity of its closed-tube cultivation system at its plant in the Negev region of southern Israel.


 Algatechnologies has long used the closed tube system to produce the photosynthetic algae Haemtococcus pluvialis, the species that produces astaxanthin. This approach helps lessen contamination. Open ponds using raceways or other architectures are potentially cheaper from the standpoint of start up capital but proponents of closed systems say that the great amount of processing needed to weed out contaminants from the finished product and the potential interruptions to production caused by large-scale contamination, wipe out the open system's initial cost advantages.  Click here to read more.
