Benexia® Xia oil and the importance of ALA in vegan diets

A review paper from 2019 demonstrates the importance of ALA in vegan diets. The purpose of this review was to report and summarize relevant findings of studies on dietary intake and biological indicator status of LA, AA, ALA, EPA, and DHA in plasma, serum, erythrocytes, platelets, breastmilk, and adipose tissue in vegans, and discuss the reasons why their diets may need dietary reference intake (DRI) Special Consideration.

The most plentiful dietary n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid is LA. N-6 fatty acid food sources commonly consumed by vegans include nuts, seeds, certain vegetables, and vegetables oils such as soybean oil, safflower oil, and corn oil.

Therefore, any diet that is mostly plant-based leads to a high dietary intake of LA as well as fibre. Since there are few plant sources high in ALA compared to LA, this may present an intake challenge for vegans to meet the ALA requirements, unless they take supplements.
